Does Tea Tree Oil Treat Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus is a very common condition. The traditional treatment for it is taking oral antifungal medication. Unfortunately, these pills can cause side effects such as skin rashes, stomach issues, and liver damage. When taking oral antifungal pills, you must go through blood tests to check your liver. The risks that come with these pills are the reason why people look for other possible treatment options. People have turned to natural remedies such as vinegar and tea tree oil.

Tea tree oil is used to treat nail fungus by soaking a cotton ball in the oil and holding it against the nail for a certain amount of time. It can also be applied using a cotton swab and allowing it to dry.

It is known to have antibacterial and antifungal properties. But, its effectivity in treating toenail fungus is uncertain. There were studies in the 90’s that investigated on the efficacy of tea tree oil in treating nail fungus. One group applied antifungal cream and another group used tea tree oil. None of the test subjects who used tea tree oil saw improvements. The study suggests that tea tree oil is not an effective treatment for toenail fungus.

Tea tree oil may be a natural remedy, but it may also cause some side effects on the surrounding skin. Side effects include: redness, swelling, itchiness, stinging, dryness, and scaling skin. It should only be used externally. Swallowing tea tree oil may cause confusion, decreased muscle control, or loss of consciousness.

To treat nail fungus safely, you may opt for laser treatment. Treatment of nail fungus using the Pinpointe laser typically requires only one treatment. It has a very high success rate and does not have any side effects or cause damage to the surrounding skin.
