Toenail fungus is a common infection that could cause pain, unusual colors, and other distortions of the nail. A nail infection usually occurs when fungi called dermatophytes spread onto the nail. Once they have done this they will feed on the keratin in the nail and can be difficult to remove. If the nail isn’t treated right after the infection is discovered, the nail could fall off. The infection could also contaminate other people who live in your house.
People who have toenail fungus may not notice it right away. However, there are many different symptoms to watch out for. Unusual colors on the nail, ranging from white to yellow to brown can all be signs of an infection. Other symptoms include the separation of the nail, as well as the release of an awful odor.
To avoid an infection, try to stay away from hot locations that cause fungi to grow. When going to a public place such as a gym or pool, do not walk around barefoot. Fungus is very contagious and could already be living in the area. Another way to help prevent an infection is to change and wash socks on a regular basis. Wearing socks for long periods of time is a common way to catch an infection so this will keep the fungus from breeding.
