What are the Long Term Effects of Nail Fungus?

Nail fungus is evidenced by discoloration of the nail and the nail become thick or brittle. However, more severe symptoms can occur if the fungus is untreated. Most commonly, the toe nail can begin to separate from the nail bed causing increased discomfort. Also, if a person has a weak immune system, the toe nail fungus can spread to other infections in the body. Permanent damage to the toe nail is another concern. Untreated toe nail fungus can be detrimental to people who have diabetes, by causing complications that are more severe.
