Onychomycosis is the scientific name for a nail fungal infection. Fungus is similar to yeast. It’s on our skin and bodies. You can’t get rid of it, just like you can’t get rid of the bacteria in your mouth. Sometimes the fungus gets under the nails and the fungal debris thicken and discolor the nails and occasionally even lift it off the nail bed. At this stage the infection becomes painful and can lead to a secondary infection or an ingrown nail. Many people do not experience pain; however they don’t like the look of the discolored nail and decide to treat the toenail fungus infection for aesthetic reasons. The pain can be due to pressure of the shoe on the infected nail or from the thickened nail growing into the skin.
